CrossFit Open – Goal Setting

Ok. I’m just going to say it. I’m annoyed with The Open, and here’s why.

I worked my butt off for 20 minutes last week and got TWELVE REPS LESS than I did this week – and I only worked for 8 minutes. In less than half the time, I did more reps. Hey Castro, can we just get rid of those marathon WODS, please and thank you?

Last week, I bragged all about how I placed 20,000-somethingth place in the world with the first workout of the CrossFit Open. This week, I’m bragging all about how I beat my husband in 16.2.

Some of you may already know this about me because you read all about how I’m not sweet, but Bill and I are pretty competitive. The first time Bill saw me lose my temper was on our honeymoon playing a board game – I literally stormed out of the room when I lost. I was so young and naive two years ago.

I’m so competitive that when I figure out I’m not great at something, I usually quit because I get frustrated that I’m not the best. Sometimes I compete with Bill, and neither of us know I’m competing until everything blows up and I’m crying and I finally realize why I’m upset, and it’s because I lost an argument that Bill didn’t even know he was participating in. It’s like that. Again, I’m not that sweet.

I tell you these horrible qualities about myself so that you might imagine my reaction to this friendly little Facebook jab from a friend after 16.1:

Challenge

It. Was. On. Until I saw what 16.2 was.

16.2 went a little somethin’ like this:

Beginning on a 4-minute clock, complete as many reps as possible of:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
15 squat cleans, 135 / 85 lb.

If completed before 4 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
13 squat cleans, 185 / 115 lb.

If completed before 8 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
11 squat cleans, 225 / 145 lb.

If completed before 12 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
9 squat cleans, 275 / 175 lb.

If completed before 16 minutes, add 4 minutes to the clock and proceed to:
25 toes-to-bars
50 double-unders
7 squat cleans, 315 / 205 lb.

Stop at 20 minutes.

So here’s the deal with my toes-to-bar. I can’t string even two together. I do one, then reset – I just haven’t figured out that kip yet for T2B. Bill has. And pound-for-pound, he’s stronger than I am. We’re about the same on double unders. So I did NOT have a good chance with this one.

My goal was to beat Bill, but that’s what Kara Webb calls a “greedy goal.My realistic goal was to finish round one.

I started off with 5 toes-to-bar, just hanging and swinging there. Then I realized – I’m wasting SO much time and energy doing this. It was actually more efficient for me to do one toes-to-bar, drop off the bar, then get back on for one more – twenty-five times. So that’s what I did. I did my 50 double unders unbroken, then went to work with those squat cleans. I finished round one with some seconds to spare, so I hopped back onto the bar for one toes-to-bar. Then one more. And one more. Until I got twenty-five, then went to the double unders. I finished 16.2 with three squat cleans in the second round – way more than I expected to get!

For some reason Bill just didn’t do well. He even redid this one, and he still didn’t do well. I judged him, and I promise I didn’t no-rep him just to beat him – they were actually no-reps. 😉 Love you, babe.

To say the least, I’ve enjoyed my week of gloating:

Just in case y’all are wondering how I beat the top 3 athletes in the North Central Region, it’s clearly because they hadn’t entered their scores yet.

So the moral of the story is to mercilessly shame your spouse as much as you can because you never know when the next time you’ll beat him may be.

Or it may be to set goals. Realistic ones and greedy ones.

I wonder what our churches would look like if we did this on a more consistent basis? What would the world look like if our goal was to get rid of hurting and oppression and poverty? What would it look like if we set the goal to rid the world of hunger and give clean water to everyone? How different would things be if we set goals like truly loving God and loving others? And while these goals may be big and audacious, isn’t that what the power of Christ does – transform the world?

And what if we set realistic goals for ourselves too? Like – oh, I don’t know – spending time in prayer and devotion daily, or meditating, or mending a broken relationship? Loving my family well? Serving my local community once a month? Allowing God to transform one area of my life? Taking care of God’s creation?

And what if when we begin to meet our realistic goals, that moves us one step closer to meeting our “greedy” goals?

“The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed…Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of all garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” – Matthew 13:31-32
