Even though my parents named me after a street sign in my hometown, it was no coincidence Melissa became my name, as it means “honeybee” in Greek. According to the myths, the nymph Melissa discovered and taught the usages of honey. As time progressed, certain priestess became called the Melissae. These women took on priest and prophet roles, both gathering and sharing wisdom. 

I’ve dedicated my life to gathering and sharing: ideas, theology, and wonder. I firmly believe that beautiful things can bloom through that kind of pollination, and it’s my joy to play my small part as a speaker, writer, consultant, and entrepreneur.

You can find me buzzing around, weaving my insights from progressive Christianity into resources that nourish families and churches who do ministry with young people. As an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church, I serve as a bridge between the church and the world and light up when I can help folks sense the wonder and mystery in the mundane.

I grew up in East Texas, earned a Bachelor’s in Biblical Studies and Greek at Ouachita Baptist University, then graduated Summa Cum Laude from Perkins School of Theology with a Master’s of Theological Studies. Some say I have a knack for making complex (and sometimes boring) theology digestible to young people. Fresh out of seminary and a little over-eager, I once taught my 5th grade Sunday School class about inaugurated eschatology – and they got it!

My favorite things currently include: my blooming flower beds, Sudoku puzzles in the morning, home-roasted coffee, long walks listening to a good audiobook, and my people. Bill and I have been married for a long time, and we enjoy West Coast Swing dancing. Our son Finn makes us laugh everyday and asks the biggest and best questions about God.
